Chamber goes environmental in August

The Saipan Chamber of Commerce will hold its August general membership luncheon on Wednesday, Aug. 1, 2012, at the Fiesta Resort and Spa Saipan in Garapan. Luncheon begins at 11:30am, and the meeting begins at 12pm sharp. Luncheon is $20 for Chamber members, $30 for guests and the public.

Chamber president Douglas Brennan will hand the August meeting over to the SCC Environmental Committee, co-chairmen Greg Moretti, executive director of the Pacific Maritime Resources Institute, and Ron Smith, owner of Angil Design, Inc., to introduce speakers who will focus on environmental issues.

Dr. Peter Houk, chief biologist for the Pacific Marine Resources Institute, will speak on “The Status of the CNMI’s Coral Reef Resources,” and John Gourley, principal/owner of Micronesian Environmental Services, will speak on “A Characterization of the 2011 Saipan Reef Fish Market.”

Kaitlin Mattos, watershed coordinator for CNMI Department of Environmental Quality, will speak briefly on the upcoming Garapan Conservation Action Planning Workshop on Sept. 10-13, 2012.

Rebecca Skeele of the CNMI Coastal Resources Management Office will make a brief presentation on the upcoming National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s Coastal Services Center’s three-day workshop titled “Climate Change for Coastal Communities” this Aug. 7-9, 2012.

The Chamber and the Environmental Committee will also announce the revival of the successful Cash for Trash program. Details will be provided where student and civic groups will clean designated areas of Saipan for cash.

The Saipan Chamber of Commerce, founded in 1959 and incorporated in 1976, is the largest private business organization in the CNMI. The Chamber has 170 members, and works to promote and protect the business, economic, and civic interests, and general health and welfare, of the islands. (SCC)
