Chalan Piao Supermarket opened with much fanfare last Oct. 18 to fill the need for more grocery stores in the southern part of Saipan.

Operations manager Bhiya Canadalla said the owners of Chalan Piao Supermarket decided to open a grocery in the area to show that recovery is finally in full swing in the southern part of the island.

It will be recalled that Super Typhoon Yutu wreaked havoc in the villages of Koblerville, San Antonio, and Susupe in October last year.

To celebrate the grand opening of Chalan Piao Supermarket last month, Canadalla said they lit firecrackers and held hourlong Zumba activities at the site.

She said the firecrackers lasted 20 minutes while the Zumba dances were courtesy of Let’s Move Marianas and its instructor, Joseph Caranto. It was so popular that the Zumba activities didn’t only happen on the first day but carried over on the second day of the store’s opening on Oct. 19.

Chalan Piao Supermarket also offered special sales during its first day of operations and it was so popular that it became a weekend sale. Huge discounts were offered on items ranging from rice to frozen items, and chicken boxes.

Chalan Piao Supermarket prides itself with brand new freezers that contain only the freshest produce from Japan, China, Korea, the Philippines, and the U.S. mainland, and wide aisles that customers can easily navigate.

The new grocery store is also strategically located near banks, schools, and restaurants in Chalan Piao, Susupe, and San Antonio.

The owners of Chalan Piao Supermarket can’t wait for Hopwood Middle School to be rebuilt and finally reopen, Canadalla said. As the largest middle school in the Commonwealth, the supermarket is very eager to meet the students’ and staff’s needs, she added.

Chalan Piao Supermarket is located on the first floor of the VS Sablan Building beside Subway in Chalan Piao. It is manned by six staff including Canadalla and is open every day from 6am to 12am.
