Chalan Kiya/Loving Hands' Dante Tabora pulls up for his second free throw during the closing seconds of their game against San Roque/Morales in the MDX caging last Sunday at the Civic Center Basketball Court. (Roselyn B. Monroyo) Chalan Kiya/Loving Hands notched its fourth win in five games after eking out a 74-69 victory over San Roque/Morales in the 2011 MDX Amateur Radio Club Inter-Village Friendship League last Sunday at the Civic Center Basketball Court in Susupe.

Jason Bahillo got an offensive rebound and made a putback to move Chalan Kiya to solo third place in Pool B of the 18-team village league behind the undefeated San Vicente/Saints (3-0) and As Lito/Chow Queen (2-0). San Roque dropped to fourth place with its 3-2 card.

Before Bahillo’s crucial rebound and basket, Chalan Kiya was holding a precarious two-point lead, 71-69, with Amor Zapata getting ready for a pair of charities, 11 seconds left in the match. Zapata drilled the first free throw, but missed the second. In the rebound play, a San Roque player jumped too early, while Bahillo was just in time for the offensive board and didn’t bother to bring the ball down before making a basket that gave Chalan Kiya a five-point lead, six seconds remaining on the clock. San Roque fumbled in the ensuing play and time expired.

San Roque and Chalan Kiya had a neck-and-neck battle from start to finish with San Roque having the edge in the end after hitting five free throws in the homestretch.

The first two came from Jeff Bahillo, giving Chalan Kiya the lead, 69-67. San Roque missed on the other end, while Dante Tabora collared the offensive board and drew a foul. Tabora canned both charities, upping the lead to four, 71-67, with 23 seconds left in the game.

San Roque drilled a quick two-pointer off Gilbert Miranda’s layup to remain afloat and then gave up a foul on Zapata to stop the clock. The ploy seemed to work for San Roque, as Zapata split his charities, but in the end Chalan Kiya got the break with Jason Bahillo’s offensive rebound.

San Antonio 94, Chalan Laulau 49

In the first game, San Antonio/Gene’s Barber cruised past Chalan Laulau/AON Insurance.

San Antonio now has a 4-1 record for a share of first place with Garapan/JHEM’S in Pool A, while Chalan Laulau fell to an even 2-2 card. A 29-4 start was all San Antonio needed to break the game wide open en route to a 45-point victory.
