The Commonwealth Cancer Association partnered with Joeten Enterprises last Saturday for a celebrity bagging event at Joeten stores in Susupe, Kagman, Dandan, and Garapan.

This was the first celebrity-bagging event for Lung and Pancreatic Cancer Awareness Month. CCA stationed an information table and distributed flyers to customers, encouraging everyone to join the fight against cancer. CCA hopes to hold another celebrity bagging in December.

Acting governor Ralph DLG Torres, proclaimed November as Lung and Pancreatic Cancer Awareness Month in late October in recognition of the CNMI’s commitment to making lung cancer a public health priority through advocacy, support, and care for those affected by cancer.

The proclamation acknowledged how lifestyle factors contribute to the risk and development of cancer and urged people to educate themselves and explore ways to decrease their risks and promote a healthier lifestyle.

It also confirmed that lung cancer is the most common cancer among residents of the CNMI. The proclamation states that 10 to 15 percent of lung cancer cases occur in people who have never smoked and over 90 percent of lung cancer cases are caused by smoking and that only 16 percent of people diagnosed with lung cancer have a five-year survival rate.

Among those that supported the celebrity bagging event were Joeten Enterprises, IT&E, Tan Holdings, the CNMI Fire Department & EMS, Reps. Vinnie Sablan, JP Sablan, Frances Taimanao, Larry DeLeon Guerrero, and Angel Demapan, Sen. Teresita Santos, Mayor David M. Apatang, Delta Air Line’s Chris Concepcion, Department of Commerce directors Frank Aguon and Frank Cabrera, the board of directors for the Paddling Federation of the Commonwealth, and Department of Community and Cultural Affairs Secretary Laura Ogumoro.
