CEC says July 11 is last day to establish residency requirements
July 11, 2016 is the last day to establish the 120-day residency requirements in order to vote in the Nov. 9, 2016, general elections, according to Commonwealth Election Commission acting executive director Julita Villagomez.
Villagomez said for example U.S. citizens living in Guam can register as voters in the CNMI if they move here before July 11.
“You’re in Guam and you been voting over there and you moved out here since January of this year, you can register on Saipan. That already meet the 120 days,” she said.
Villagomez said in the case of U.S. citizens who will move over to the CNMI on July 12, 2016, CEC cannot register them because of failure to meet the requirements for residency.
She said those who like to establish residency, they have to come at the CEC office in Susupe to fill out a form and that all they need to bring is valid U.S. passport or birth certificate from the Vital Statistics.
Villagomez said CEC started registering voters since a week after the November 2015 elections.
She said so far they have over 100 new registrants for this year.
There are 35 seats up for grabs in the coming Nov. 8 general elections.
Villagomez said it used to be called mid-term elections, but CEC now calls it general elections.
The top seat for this election is the U.S. Delegate for the U.S. House of Representatives, a position that has been held by Gregorio Kilili C. Sablan, an independent, since he was first elected in 2008.
