There were only 44 who asked to apply for absentee voting by electronic/mail as of yesterday, a day before the deadline for the March 23 special election for Precinct 3.

Commonwealth Election Commission administrative officer Kayla Igitol said they really don’t know why only few individuals asked to avail of absentee voting but historically, special elections or any small elections in the CNMI, has a low turnout of voters.

At the Nov. 13 general election, there were 390 absentee voters for Precinct 3.

Igitol reminded those who want to apply for absentee voting that the deadline is today, Tuesday, at 11:59pm.

CEC started accepting requests for absentee ballots last Jan. 23.

As of last Jan. 28, there were 3,361 registered voters for Precinct 3.

At the Nov. 13 general election, there were 3,795 voters for Precinct 3 and out of those number, 2,867, including absentee voters, or 75.54 percent, cast their votes.

Gov. Ralph DLG Torres set the March 23 special election after the death of representative Francisco D. Dela Cruz last month.

There are four candidates—former representative Donald Cabrera Barcinas of the Democratic Party, Marco Taisakan Peter of the Republican Party, and independent candidates David Castro Sablan and Mariano DLG Fajardo.
