CCDF secures its largest federal grant to date

The Department of Community and Cultural Affairs Child Care and Development Fund confirmed Monday that they have effectively doubled their budget through a federal grant.

CCDF, under the DCCA, has confirmed during a State and Territorial Meeting last week that it would be receiving an additional $2.1 million in fiscal year 2018, effectively doubling its budget to $4.2 million—the largest federal assistance it has received to date.

“The funding will be used primarily to address child care subsidies. These are funds provided to families who are working or attending school on a full-time basis. The CCDF has had to maintain a wait list of around 130 families. This new funding will allow for the provision of assistance to all of the families currently on the wait list,” a DCCA statement noted.

The funding would allow the program to cover costs of training and coaching for child care providers, to continue the development of high quality care for children, and to implement the Quality Rating and Improvement System, which is a systematic approach to assessing and improving the quality of care in early and school age care, and communicating this to consumers of child care.

“The CCDF has also worked with child care providers and grantor staff to develop plans for the implementation of the program to assist in fostering new resident employment in child care programs through training, mentor periods, and incentives. The program is designed to see resident U.S. citizens and permanent residents brought into the child care workforce and is made possible through the recent allocation of local supplementary funding,” the DCCA statement noted.

According to the statement, the additional federal and local funds represent an “improved picture” of the future of child care provision and access to these services by families.
