U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers prevented a 23-year old man accused of sexual abuse of a minor from departing the Commonwealth on Sunday.

Manuel Sotto Cabrera was taken into custody at the Francisco C. Ada/Saipan International Airport just prior to boarding a flight destined for Guam. Cabrera is on probation and was out on bail awaiting his trial in the CNMI on child sex abuse-related charges at the time of his arrest.

CBP officers, acting on a tip from U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, confirmed Cabrera’s identity and then notified Commonwealth Port Authority police and the Department of Public Safety. CPA police and DPS officers confirmed Cabrera’s status, and completed the arrest.

“CBP works closely with federal, state, and local law enforcement agencies to ensure our borders are secure,” said CBP CNMI port director John Sullivan. “This arrest demonstrates the diligent work that CBP officers continue to display at ports of entry to keep the public safe.”

CPA Police Chief Jordan Kosam said: “I commend officers from both respective federal and local law enforcement agencies for contributing to the apprehension and most especially for being diligent and vigilant at their line of work. This demonstrate partnership and overlap jurisdiction for safety and security of our traveling community.” (Saipan Tribune)
