Cataluna wins May tourney by a mile
Freddie Cataluna left the rest of the field biting his dust to win the Fil-Taga Golfers Association May Ace of the Month Tournament held last May 20 at the LaoLao Bay Golf & Resort.
The Iloilo, Philippines native shot a net score of 65.5 after taming the greens and fairways of Kagman golf course. The 3.5-handicapper shot an excellent gross score of 69.
The 55-year-old businessman said topping the May tourney was unexpected because he started the 18 rounds of golf with a so-so game.
“I played earlier and was not happy with my game. I usually shoot better after 3-4 holes. Weather was very good for scoring and I also liked the greens on the west course. I just enjoyed playing and loving golf whether you shot good or bad. The key is accepting you’re an amateur and just enjoy it,” he said.
He dedicated his win last May to his very supportive wife and their children.
“I’m dedicating the win to them for letting me play the game I love.”
Cataluna said the sport of golf is a hard game that prioritizes mental strength more than the physical one, “but you just enjoy it without expecting to win as more often than not it makes you relax and focus.”
“With my 3 handicap it’s trusting your ability and understanding the elements. Also I try to stay on my routine and mindset to make myself better each hole,” he added.
Ronnie Santos came second with a net score of 70 after shooting a gross of 87, while completing the Top 3 was Das Krishnan who had a net of 74 after the 1-handicapper shot a gross of 75.
The rest of the May tourney participants, with their net score in parenthesis, were Ruben Avendano (76), Albert Pajarillaga (77), Jhun Cayetano (77), Lito Mendoza (79), Roland Merar (80), and returnee Antonio Tabornil (gross 98).
In the par 3 competition, Cataluna topped holes No. 3 and 13, while Merar was without peer in hole No. 17.
