Castro concerned with condition of docs, facility at Land Registration
Rep. Manny Gregory T. Castro (Ind-Saipan) expressed concern yesterday over the condition of some of the documents and the facility at the Division of Land Registration and Survey of the Department of Lands and Natural Resources.
Speaking at the House Ways and Means Committee hearing for the DLNR 2024 budget, Castro said he has visited DLNR several times and believes the land registration facility needs upgrading.
“Those are millions, even billions, of dollars of assets and records that need to be preserved because those are people’s lives. And sometimes, the security is not up to par in comparison to the court,” he said.
Even the loss of just one document can be a big loss to not only the government but families, he said. “So I hope the administration puts some emphasis on investing in that unit because it’s really important,” Castro said.
DLNR Secretary Sylvan Igisomar said they recognize the importance of these documents and had just applied for several federal grants for Lands and Survey.
“We’re trying to reach out and we understand again the limitation of our own economic situation, so we’re trying to be as creative as possible and not be too dependent on the local economy,” Igisomar said.
