Castillo leads winners list in 2018 Rota Fishing Derby

Reynaldo Castillo topped the most variety category in the 2018 Rota Budweiser Cliff Fishing Derby held last Aug. 4 and 5 at the At Matmos and Pona Point.

Castillo caught 18 variety of fish to earn first place honors, while Johnny Mesngon and Adriano Taguilbo finished second and third. Mesngon and Taguilbo had 15 each and the former won the tiebreak, while Polly Manglona was ranked fourth after catching nine.

In the heaviest weight category, Johnny Mensgon came out on top with his 46.38-lb catch, while Joaquin Fujihira locked second place by hauling 28.24 lbs, and Castillo earned third place with his 19.24-lb catch.

In the biggest fish category, Samuel Atalig secured first place as the barracuda he caught at Pina Point weighed 22.08 lbs. Mesngon had another runner-up finish after seizing up a 12-lb red snapper at As Matmos Cliff, while Clayton Manglona’s 10.62-lb skipjack tuna that was also caught at As Matmos handed him the third place honors.

Marianas Visitors Authority awarded the Top 3 finishers in the biggest and heaviest catch $300, $200, and $100 cash prizes. The Top 4 winners in the most species, on the other hand, received in-kind prizes from event sponsor Ambros Incorporated/Budweiser.

The cliff derby, which was supported by Ambros Incorporated, MVA, Office of the Mayor of Rota, and the 16th Rota Municipal Council, drew 31 participants.
