Cashiers tag Mirano in stale check cashing scam

Cashiers yesterday testified Earl Eric Mirano as the one who purchased some items at their stores using CNMI tax refund checks that turned out to be stale and forged.

A cashier at Hannam Market said that Mirano, a regular customer, bought some grocery items worth $56.52 using a tax refund check in the amount of $189.83.

“I thought it’s a legitimate check,” said the cashier during the ongoing federal jury trial of Mirano and his co-defendant, Mohammad Jahangir Miah.

The cashier testified that when she asked for an identification card, Mirano handed her his passport.

Miah and Mirano are facing charges over a scheme of cashing stale CNMI tax refund checks in grocery stores. They are charged with conspiracy to commit bank fraud and bank fraud. The trial began on Monday.

A cashier at LJ Store also testified yesterday that he recognized Mirano as the person who purchased some items at the store using a tax refund check on Jan. 24, 2012.

The cashier said he looked at the photograph on a driver’s license that Mirano handed him. The cashier, however, admitted that he did not see Mirano sign the check.

A manager at Green Consume Market also testified, followed by Bank of Guam vice president for Saipan regional manager Marcie Tomokane.
