The CNMI’s Carol Lee earned her second straight win in the singles event of the ITF/CAT North African Circuit to march into the quarterfinals of the Grade 3 event in Casablanca, Morocco yesterday.

Lee outclassed Austria’s Emily Meyer, 6-3, 6-1, to make it to the Round of 8 where she will be paired against Hungary’s Luca Janosi. The Hungarian advanced after sweeping two opponents, Burundi’s Aisha Niyonkuru, 6-2, 6-0, and Nigeria’s Barakat Oyinlomo Quadre, 6-3, 6-3.

The Commonwealth player is seeded No. 2 in the 32-player field, which has four other seeded players barging into the quarterfinals. Joining Lee in the Round of 8 were No. 1 Abuane Droguet, No. 4 Margaux Rouvroy, No. 3 Sophia Biolay, No. 8 Lucie Nguyen, and qualifier Celia Belle Mohr of France, and the unranked Ekaterina Vinnik of Russia.

The tournament in Casablanca is the second of the three events Lee lined up for her Morocco trip.

Meanwhile, in a local competition, the 19th Pacific Islands Club Tennis Championships will have its second and final set of games this weekend.

In the centerpiece men’s open, eight players will vie for the division champion. Leading the list is the CNMI’s No. 1 junior player Robbie Schorr, while veterans Jeff Race and Bobby Cruz, junior players Sean Lee, Vincent Tudela, and Jimin Woo, J.R. Jacinto, and Vince Aquino are also in the mix.

In the women’s open, there are only four entries in Tania Tan, Mayuko Arriola, Maria Gregoire, and Malika Miyawaki. In the men’s 4.0 singles, junior player Daniel Kang is the early favorite and will be joined in the field by David Kwon, Gary Ramsey, Andy Kim, and Anthony Gregoire.

Gregoire will also compete in the boys U16 doubles and will partner with Schorr. The pairs of Kwon and Jun Wang, Kang and Isaac Heo, Andy Kim and Sam Ryu, and Woo and Jun Cheol Hwang will also play this weekend.

In the girls U12 doubles, Dana Lee will team up with Serin Chung and they will battle the division crown against the duos of Hoo Wang and Anna Kwon, Helen Kim and Seiyul Hong, and Irin Chung and Savita Sikkel. For the boys U12 doubles, Wataru Kadokura and June will go head-to-head against Nasol Wessel and Juncheol Hwang.

The girls U16 doubles also has only two teams with Hye Jin Elliot joining forces with Serin and Maria Gregoire pairing with Helen Kim.
