The CNMI’s Carol Lee still got a chance to compete in the main draw of the ongoing 2019 AGL Loy Yang Traralgon Junior International.

Lee, who was eliminated in the qualifying tournament for the singles main draw, made it to the 32-team doubles field and was scheduled to play in the first round last Saturday afternoon at the hard court of the Traralgon Tennis Association in Victoria, Australia.

The 17-year-old was paired against India’s Shivani Amineni and the wild card duo was to face a tough opponent in the No. 7 seed Kamila Bartone of Latvia and Guilia Morlet of France. Lee’s teammate is ranked No. 153 in the world at the end of the 2018 season, while their foes are in the Top 100 with Bartone ranked at No. 27 and Morlet at No. 86. Morlet is in the main draw of the singles, too and won her first match versus Megan Smith of Australia, 6-2, 6-0, while Bartone had a heartbreaking loss to Amber Marshall, also from the host country, 1-6, 6-3, 3-6.

The Bartone-Morlet and Lee-Ameneni tiff was scheduled to start at 3pm last Saturday, but results have yet to posted at the ITF Juniors website at press time.

Meanwhile, Aussie Anastasia Berezov and Grace Schumacher were the first ones to win in the doubles event of the Grade 1 tournament after sweeping Russia’s Elina Avanesyan and Maria Krupepina, 6-2, 6-2.

In the singles, 10 out of the 16 seeded players advanced to the second round with No. 1 Clara Tauson of Denmark and No. 2 Qinwen Zheng of China coasting past their first round foes.

Lee missed the singles main draw after winning only one match in the qualifying tournament. She needed two victories to enter the main draw.
