Carmelita II ruled last Saturday’s 13 th Annual Mahi Fishing Derby, beating more than 30 entries in this year’s competition.

The Alexandro Castro-captained Carmelita II reeled in a 28.95lb mahi to take the first place honors in the weekend tournament. Helping Castro haul the winning catch were his son Alex Castro Jr., Patrick Uluchong, and Tom Diaz.

Carmelita II’ catch was just over two pounds heavier that the 26.2-lb mahi Flame of Love got. The runner-up was captained by Keith Joe Torres and has Cujay Echulico as his lone angler.

In the battle for third to fifth place, a close fight emerged among Champy, Team As Teo, and Victoria. Champy captain Jesse Aldan was on board My Lady Gora and he and his anglers Jason and Champ Aldan, Bernardo Reoligio, and Keiji Takeda brought in at the Smiling Cove Marina dock their 25.5lb mahi to beat the 25.2 of Team As Teo. Paul Roberto was Team As Teo’s captain and was joined on the boat (Conservation Minded) by anglers Ralph Torres, Joey Cruz, and James Roberto.

Victoria of team captain Diego Benavente and his wife Vicky and angler Scott Shular finished fifth after bringing in a 24.5lb mahi.

Meanwhile, tournament organizer Saipan Fishermen Association would like to thank the following for supporting last weekend’s derby: MARPAC Budweiser, Docomo Pacific, Fishing Tackle, IP&E, Yamaha, MINA, Marianas Visitors Authority, Rep. Joseph P. Deleon Guerrero, and the Division of Fish and the Wildlife

SFA also acknowledged all the participants (anglers and boat captains) and volunteers and encouraged them to join the Saipan International Fishing Derby that will be held in July.
