A car being driven by a 19-year-old student caught fire on As Terlaje Hill near the Northern Marianas College on Friday afternoon.

No one was injured. The male student managed to get out of the car on time.

The fire engulfed the Toyota Camry, with license plate ACX-760.

The Department of Fire and Emergency Medical Services has yet to release information about the incident to the media.

Saipan Tribune learned that the student was driving the car along Monsignor Guerrero Road on his way to NMC when he noticed smoke inside the car so he immediately parked it on a small road on As Terlaje Hill.

The student alighted from the car as the fire spread and engulfed the car. Firefighters came and extinguished the blaze a few minutes later.

The fire caused traffic for an hour on Monsignor Guerrero Road.

The student’s father, who later arrived at the scene, said it was the first car they bought for their son.

The student had just come from Marianas High School, where he is a teacher aide.

The cause of the blaze is still unknown.
