Cape Air joins adopt-a-place program
Cape Air has adopted the Oleai Beach and committed to cleaning it up and maintaining it as part of the Saipan and Northern Islands Municipal Council’s adopt-a-place program.
Municipal council chair Ramon B. Camacho joined 12 Cape Air personnel led by manager Orlando Santos last Wednesday during the airline firm’s inaugural cleanup of the area from Oleai Park to the Atkins-Kroll intersection.
According to Camacho, Cape Air called the municipal council to express its interest in participating in the program.
“Cape Air wanted to participate, to adopt this place and this is the area they picked,” Camacho said.
Santos told the municipal council that the airline company wanted to do something for the community and has chosen to participate in the revival of the adopt-a-place program.
Camacho noted that the program was part of the Neighborhood Watch Task Force and Village Revitalization program and was intended to beautify the island with regular cleanups from various groups, churches, schools, residents, and businesses. The Department of Public Works later replaced it with its adopt-a-highway program.
Santos said that they chose the area because it was one of the areas that was still available.
“We will do it once a month and when we have less flights or if we have a lot of time, we will clean,” Santos said.
Santos noted that every staff is willing to participate because it was they who brought up the idea of wanting to give back to the community through cleanups.
According to Camacho, Cape Air is the first to come forward after the adopt-a-place program was revived.
“We want to ask the community to please join this program and contact us so we can map it out,” he said.
