Camacho is named acting CUC executive director
The Commonwealth Utilities Corp. has a new acting executive director.
CUC chair Adelina Roberto told Saipan Tribune last week that Power Division manager Gary Camacho will now be serving as the acting executive director.
According to Roberto, Camacho will hold CUC’s top position in an acting capacity for 60 days.
John Riegel, who is also CUC’s chief engineer, has been the acting executive director since Alan Fletcher’s contract expired last July. As required by stipulated orders, CUC is mandated to appoint an executive director within 150 days of vacancy.
Riegel’s 150-day term in his acting capacity won’t end until this week but since he has been on leave since Saturday, the board already appointed Camacho to take his place.
CUC has been unable to find someone to hold the executive director post permanently five months after Fletcher vacated the position.
In a prior interview with Riegel, he said the board is handling the hiring process for the executive director and that there were some applicants.
“I am not involved in that hiring process,” Riegel said. “I do know there were several names that were forwarded to [the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency] to get their concurrence about which ones are eligible and the board is still waiting to hear from EPA.”
Among the requirements for the position based on the stipulated order is that an applicant should have at least 10 years of senior management experience in a similar wastewater, drinking water, and/or power utility, with similar or greater capital and operating budgets, capital improvement projects, human resource needs, utility financing issues, operation and maintenance training, and implementation needs.
