The Solomon Islands’ National Hosting Authority is calling on the members of the public, especially those living close to the 2023 Pacific Games’ facilities, to acknowledge the opportunities the country is presented with in having the brand new sports facilities and therefore to look after these properties.

These facilities include the National Stadium of Solomon Islands, and the 2023 Pacific Games venues constructed on the east and west of it, PG2023 Football Training Fields/SIFF Academy, the Friendship Hall, the DC Park Marine Centre, and the SINIS.

The donor-funded projects includes PG2023 Games’ Villages, where the People’s Republic of China government constructed a 900-bed games village at SINU, Games that will become SINU dormitory post games, and upgrades of dormitories and classrooms at selected schools and institutions on the east of Honiara City.

The executive director of the Secretariat, Christian Nieng, said in a statement that the Solomons are fortunate to receive these assets from donor partners and the best they can reciprocate and show appreciation for these gifts is to take care of them.

“The sports venues are also very essential infrastructure for hosting the 2023 Pacific Games donated to us therefore all citizens must appreciate the gift given to us. It serves as the core facilities for organizing competitions, training, and other related activities.

The construction and operation of the facilities are crucial for the successful hosting of the Pacific Games that we will host from Nov. 19 to Dec. 2 2023. They will become the primary stages for various sporting events this year and beyond.”

It would also be much appreciated if staff and students who will use the newly built dormitory at SINU and the renovated dormitories and classrooms to look after them because these would house visiting Pacific athletes during the Pacific Games, added Nieng.

He stressed that the Solomons are lucky to have been given the opportunity to host the Pacific Games because it gives them the chance, with their partners, to build high-quality sporting facilities for the country that they would otherwise not have had it not for the 2023 Pacific Games.

“These facilities are given to us through the generous support of donor partners; hence, it is incumbent on all of us to take ownership of these assets and look after them,” he said. (PR)
