10 gain finals berths in Coconut Classic

Ten junior players secured finals seats in the 2014 White Coconut Classic Tennis Tournament at the conclusion of the over the weekend games at the American Memorial Park tennis courts.

In the girls U14 singles, top-ranked Julia Ishikawa advanced to the finals after dominating Ami Tsukagoshi in the semifinals last Saturday, 8-1. Ishikawa will be battling the championship against Tania Tan, who outclassed Malika Miyawaki in the other semis pairing.

In the girls U10 singles, Erika Tuttle pulled off an upset over top seed Hana Ojima, 7-6 (5), to arrange a title duel against Maria Gregoire, who defeated Maaya Sato in the lower bracket semis yesterday. Gregoire, the No. 2 seed in the draw, earlier eliminated Marielle Lopez in the quarterfinals last Saturday, 6-2, to set a semis date with Sato, who ousted Ellie Epley, 7-5. Ojima also won her quarterfinal match against Hye Jin Elliot, 6-1, before bowing to Tuttle, who marched into the semis after a 6-2 triumph over Tiara Imai.

The two other girls singles contests have a round-robin format and winners will only be decided once the games are completed today. In the girls U18 singles, Mikayla Lopez has a 2-0 record after downing Alina Ishikawa in the opening week, 8-1, and Negahr Rastguiy last Saturday, 8-2, and would take the crown if she prevails against Carol Lee today at 12:30m. Lee, who also topped Rastguiy in Week 1, 8-4, has two more games left with the other one against Ishikawa at 11am.

In the girls U12, it will be a sibling battle between Conatsu and Coume Kaga, who have three wins apiece. Conatsu is scheduled to face Jireh Warren in one of the two remaining games today and a victory would give her the girls U12 single tiara and hand her sister Coume (3-1) the runner-up honors. Riko Ojima and Susan Sablan will collide in the other match set for today.

In the boys U12 singles, it will be Ken Song against Sean Lee. Song took the finals ticket in the top half of the bracket after whipping Jamin Elliot in the semis, 8-1, while Lee prevailed in the lower bracket semis against Gang Min Kim, 8-6.

In the boys U14, Robbie Schorr will contest the championship versus Luther Lizama. Schorr was at the upper half of the draw and eliminated Joshua Abragan, 8-2, to march into the semis where he got a walkover win over top-ranked Michale Ren. Lizama also played only one game over the weekend and knocked off Tony Kim, 8-2, to make it to the finals against Schorr.

In the co-ed U18 singles, Thea Minor downed the returning Christian Miller in the semis, 8-2, to force a title showdown against Jake Lee, who crushed Colin Ramsey in the other Final Four pairing, 8-1.
