Police arrested a 34-year-old man last week for allegedly beating his stepson.

Ares O. Blancia was arrested on charges of disturbing the peace, assault and battery, and child abuse or neglect. He is being kept on a $5,000 cash bail.

Police detective Therese S. Kintoki stated in her report that a teacher from an elementary school had called the Department of Public Safety about a possible child abuse case involving one of their students.

That same day at 9:47am, police officers Jesus Cepeda and Daniel Kintol arrived at the school and interviewed the teacher, who is also a counselor.

She told Cepeda that a 4th grade student came to school with bruises on his face. The teacher then showed the officers the alleged victim’s written statement about what had happened on the night of Jan. 29, 2014.

According to the victim’s statement, he had spanked and scratched his younger brother that night. The next morning, Jan. 30, his stepfather, Blancia, woke him up from sleep and spanked, slapped, and at some point punched the victim repeatedly until the mother of the victim stopped Blancia.

Kintol and Cepeda met with the alleged victim and observed red marks on his right cheek. When asked if he felt any pain, the victim reportedly replied that there was no pain, but he was experiencing abdominal pain earlier that morning.

Cepeda and Kintol proceeded to Blancia’s house in San Antonio, where they met Blancia and his wife.

Blancia was arrested at about 11:09am and brought to the Department of Corrections where he was booked and detained.

Blancia is set to return to court on Feb. 24, 2014, after his preliminary hearing on Feb. 11, 2014. (Jayson Camacho)
