Up to $1M in remaining bond interest eyed for cultural center

Rep. Ray Tebuteb (Ind-Saipan) will formally introduce today a bill re-appropriating $1 million of the remaining $140 million bond interest within the Commonwealth Development Authority to build a cultural center on Saipan, among other things.
Tebuteb’s House Bill 18-167, co-sponsored by at least five other members, is proposing the construction of an Isla Cultural Centre within the Carolinian Affairs Office grounds in Garapan.
He said the cultural center would provide a venue to learn and demonstrate traditional Chamorro and Carolinian arts, crafts and traditions. It will also become an added attraction for tourists.
The bill also seeks the development of various roads, including Bouganvilla Avenue and Rose Street, between the Carolinian Affairs Office grounds and the Garapan Fishing Base. This will provide easy and safe access to the proposed cultural center.
Under the bill, the expenditure authority for the $1 million in proposed re-appropriated money would be the Department of Public Works secretary.
[B]As Matuis land[/B]In other news, Rep. Christopher Leon Guerrero (Cov-Saipan) will also be introducing today a resolution requesting Gov. Eloy S. Inos and the Department of Public Lands to redesignate certain parcels of public lands in As Matuis for the construction of a “decent and safe community park.”
The lot is originally designated public domain to the Public School System on July 12, 1989.
Leon Guerrero, in his House Resolution 18-54, said the estimated 44,485 square meters of public land, or Lot No. 045 A 025have remained “unchartered and idle” for more than two decades.
He said the lot could be used instead for a community park that residents of the As Matuis Village Homestead have been asking for. The village homestead has some 300 house lots and Leon Guerrero said almost everything is occupied.
