Saipan municipal council announces trades scholarship

12th Saipan and Northern Islands Municipal Council chair RB Camacho, together with vice chair Antonio M. Tudela and councilman Diego Kaipat, announced yesterday that the council’s long awaited scholarship program is now available to residents of Saipan and the Northern Islands.
Applicants must be U.S. citizens and enrolled in the Northern Marianas Trades Institute. The applicant must demonstrate willingness to learn and to complete the core curriculum of his/her industry of choice in areas not limited to construction, automotive, home economics, culinary, or any other industry offered at NMTI.
The news comes on the heels of the anticipated re-opening of Saipan’s lone Northern Marianas Trades Institute.
The scholarship is sponsored by the Association of Mariana Islands Mayors, Vice Mayors, & Elected Municipal Council Members, or AMIM.
Camacho recalled how he and his colleagues in AMIM fought long and hard for this scholarship dedicated to residents interested in trades. “I recalled the initial discussion on this special scholarship some four years ago, when I was first elected to the 10th Council,” said Camacho. “I am happy though it has taken this long that it has finally come to fruition, and for two deserving students to be awarded at $500 each based on AMIM qualifying criteria and guideline.”
“I join my fellow colleagues in the Saipan and Northern Islands Municipal Council in partnership with Northern Islands Mayor Tobias Aldan and Saipan Mayor Donald Flores in welcoming this first and only scholarship dedicated to trades and high skill career workforce development over the municipality’s continuing tradition of providing assistance for our residents in pursuit of after-high school education, be it at the Northern Marianas College in As Terlaje campus or the lower base campus of the Northern Marianas Trades Institute. This news comes a long way in finally addressing head on the local workforce trades needs of Saipan and the Northern Islands,” he added.
