A man allegedly beat and choked his wife during the Lunar New Year celebration Friday night.
The suspect, Dejie Gong, 45, was arrested at the Saipan International Airport as he was about to leave the island. Gong is detained on charges of disturbing the peace, assault, assault and battery, assault with a dangerous weapon and theft. He is being kept on a $20,000 cash bail.
Police detective Isapen Bokuku stated in her report that police responded to a disturbance at the Travelers Lodge in Garapan on Jan. 31 at 4am.
The victim, a Chinese female, told the responding officer that she and her husband had an argument after he became upset that she was taking too long to cook dinner for the Lunar New Year.
Gong allegedly took a knife from the kitchen and threatened to kill her. The argument continued to the restroom where he swung the knife and it hit the tank lid on the toilet, causing it to crack. His wife then ran to her friend’s room, along with their 4-year-old daughter. Gong followed her and grabbed her arm, telling her to go back to their room. She refused, so Gong pulled his daughter’s legs but his wife held on to her daughter. The wife’s friend took Gong’s daughter and brought her to her room.
Gong then allegedly closed the bedroom door and choked her on the bed with both hands. The wife tried to resist but Gong was too strong. The wife’s friend then came and pushed Gong away from his wife.
At about 11am Gong’s wife saw him leaving the Travelers Lodge in a taxicab. She knew he was heading to the airport because she saw Gong making changes on his flight back to China. The original departure date was set at Feb. 9, 2014. She then allegedly received a text message from Gong stating that he will wait for her and their daughter in China and kill them and her family there.
The wife claimed that she then found out that Gong had taken her keys to their room and her money amounting to $3,300.
Police arrested Gong at about 11:57am at the Saipan airport. His travel documents were seized and he appeared in court on Feb. 3, 2014. His next court appearance is on Feb. 24, 2014.
