Feb. 3-7 is School Counseling Week

The CNMI State Board of Education signed Friday a proclamation endorsing Feb. 3 through 7 as National School Counseling Week and called upon students, teachers, staff of public schools, and PTA organizations to observe the event with appropriate programs and activities supporting the occasion.
Acting BOE chair Lucy Blanco-Maratita signed the proclamation Friday during the PSS Parents Summit held at Fiesta Resort & Spa Saipan, in the presence of school counselors, administrators, and stakeholders.
The proclamation was made in line with the American School Counselor Association sponsorship of the National School Counseling Week with the theme “Building Magical Futures.” The national event aims to focus public attention on the unique contribution of professional school counselors within the U.S. school systems.
“School counselors are employed in public and private schools to help students reach their full potential. They work with teachers and other educators to help students explore their potential and set realistic goals for themselves,” states the proclamation.
According to PSS, school counselors work collaboratively with educators and colleagues to ensure that each and every student is equipped with the necessary educational and life skills. They, too, help parents focus on ways to further the educational, personal, and social growth of their children.
CNMI public school records show that there are 21 school counselors on the three islands of Saipan, Tinian, and Rota.
All of them, PSS said, are actively committed to helping students explore their abilities, strengths, interests, and talents as these traits relate to career awareness and development. These counselors also seek to identify and utilize community resources that can enhance and complement comprehensive school counseling programs and help students become productive members of society.
