Three named as MCS’ Parents of the Year

For the first time in its Catholic Schools Week celebration, Mount Carmel recognized three parents who have generously given their time and commitment to the school.
“These individuals are necessary to achieving the school’s mission in educating every child to see with Christ’s eye,” said MCS president Galvin Deleon Guerrero.
Shevon Reyes, Luis Iglesias Camacho, and Edwin K. Propst received the award last Friday night at the school’s Family Night.
Reyes, 1997 MCS AlumKnight, is wife and mother of two. Reyes volunteers at the school’s library, which “takes off an added responsibility to the teachers.”
Because of Reyes, the library is now open daily for students and teachers to obtain integral learning and reading resources.
“I was so shocked and this was unexpected,” Reyes told the Saipan Tribune. “I do not volunteer to be recognized, because I just want to be in the background. However, I am very happy.”
Camacho, the father of two current MCS students and two proud AlumKnights, said that in order for any parent to succeed with their entire family, they must be involved in their children’ ‘education.
School officials shared that because of Camacho’s work at the school they saved money and redirected finances to other important programs the school runs.
Camacho recognized that other parents can do the work he does but simply do not have the time.
“I thank Mount Carmel for giving me the opportunity to be a part of their family. I value Catholic education and it is one the few things I never had in life. The Lord gave me an extra blessing to send my kids here.”
His daughter, Louisa, said, “I am happy for my dad. He works very hard every day, even when he is sick. I am proud.”
PTO president and community crusader Edwin Propst was the third recipient of the award.
“I am very thankful and honored to receive this recognition, but I feel the real Parents of the Year are our PTO officers, representatives, and members who are as generous as they are hardworking,” Propst said. “At Mt. Carmel, we are more than just a team…we are a family.”
