MHS remains flawless in MISO v’ball

Marianas High School is the only undefeated squad in the 2013-2014 Marianas Interscholastic Sports Organization Girls Volleyball League.

The Lady Dolphins gained the solo lead and a perfect 5-0 record after beating erstwhile co-leaders Saipan International School (4-1) and Mount Carmel School (4-1). The Lady Geckos met MHS On Jan. 23 in the second game on the southern court at the MHS Gymnasium and won the first two sets of their match to clinch the early win.

Though MHS swept SIS in the first two sets, both games were close ones with the former prevailing by only five points in the first set, 25-20, and two in the second 25-23. The Lady Geckos avoided a shutout after taking the third set, 15-10.

In other results in the Jan. 23 games, Grace Christian Academy (3-1), Mt. Carmel, and Saipan Southern High School (2-3) topped separate foes.

In the first game on the northern court, the defending champions Lady Eagles bagged their second win in the season after dominating Kagman High School Junior Varsity (0-5), 25-7, 25-12, 15-7. On the southern end, the Lady Knights took their third win after a similar three-set victory over SIS JV (1-3), 25-18, 25-15, 15-11.

For the second match on the north court, Southern had to labor through a 2-1 triumph over Kagman Varsity (0-4. The Lady Rays pulled off a 25-20 victory in the opening set, but failed to nail the outright win when the Lady Ayuyus stole the second set, 25-13. Then the deciding third set was a neck-and-neck battle with Southern escaping with a 16-14 triumph.

Action in the double-elimination competition continued last Tuesday with league-leading MHS handing Mt. Carmel its first loss of the season. The Lady Dolphins booked the automatic victory after prevailing in the first two sets, 25-10, 25-16, and completed the sweep with a 15-13 win in the third set.

It was a double celebration for MHS, as its junior varsity team also downed Kagman JV, 25-19, 25-10, 4-15 to improve to an even 2-2 slate.

In other results, SIS bounced back from a loss to MHS with a 25-15, 25-11, 15-9 triumph over sister squad SIS JV, while GCA extended its streak to three after beating Southern. The Eagles coasted to a 25-12 win in the opening set before pulling off a 25-19 victory in the second for the early win. The defending champions went on to shut out Southern with a 15-10 triumph in the third and last set.
