Eskuelan San Francisco de Borja students recently participated in a drawing and essay contest as part of the celebration of Catholic Schools Week 2014.

The theme “Catholic Schools: Communities of Faith, Knowledge, and Service” was used for the contest.

“This was a chance for the students to showcase their talents in drawing and essay writing skills, and also show appreciation to the many people who make up the school and the Luta community,” said administrator/principal Carmen H. Atalig.

The students participated in three categories. Category 1 was for the Kindergarten to 1st grade level. Category 2 involved the 2nd to 5th grade, while the Essay Category was for the 6th to 8th grade students.
The winners for Category I drawing contest were Edward U. Maratita, III (Kinder), first place; Star C. Mendiola (1st grade), second place; and Titus Hugh T. Hocog (1st grade), third place.

Category 2 winners for the drawing contest are Agatha Marie B. Gascon (2nd grade), first place; Kaitlyn Amber I. Balgoa (3rd grade), second place; and John Kent DLC. Clitar (3rd grade), third place.

In the essay contest, the winners were Angelica S. Lucero (8th grade), first place; Tyra Reese A. Calvo (7th grade), and Marnecia Hope B. Hocog (8th grade), third place.

“I was surprised and did not expect to win,” said second grader Agatha Gascon about her win. “This was my first time and I am happy.”

“It was pretty unexpected. I feel overwhelmed,” said eighth grade student Angelica Lucero.

Board president Edward C. Maratita Jr. said, “The goal of the contest is to encourage the students to think into the role and importance of Catholic Schools Week, as many of them illustrated in their drawings and essays. Therefore, their understanding and importance of Catholic Schools Week or Catholic education is a valuable reward.”

Congratulations to the winners and the participants of the drawing and essay contest.

The event was sponsored by the Eskuelan San Francisco de Borja board of directors. The cash and in-kind donations were donated by the ESFDB board of directors, the Pacific Regional Training Institute/Child, Youth, and School Services management and staff of Guam, Delta Air Lines-Guam, Honolulu Federal Credit Union (Hawaii), Paul and Kendra Tanaka (Hawaii), and Maj. Jon Takamura (Hawaii).

The administration, faculty, and staff would like to extend their appreciation to the judges, donors, and sponsors for a successful Catholic Schools Week drawing and essay contest event. (ESFDB)
