Rotary eyes dental clinic on Rota

The Rotary Club of Saipan will submit a proposal to the Rotary Foundation’s Global Grants Project that aims to build a dental clinic on Rota.
Rotary Club president Laila Y. Boyer said the project will be tentatively called Rota Smiles and that the organization is preparing to sign a memorandum of agreement with the Commonwealth Healthcare Corp. to push the proposal forward.
“We are well underway for the first Global Grant Project for the Rotary Club of Saipan. We’re very excited for that,” Boyer said during Tuesday’s weekly Rotary Club meeting at the Hyatt Regency Saipan.
Boyer is asking all Rotary members to pitch in and also requested the CHC and CNMI government’s help as the club’s proposal to the Rotary Foundation’s Global Grants Project must be submitted by March 31, 2014, to qualify.
To this end, Boyer announced that the Rotary’s Feb. 11 meeting at the Hyatt will be attended by Rota Legislative Delegation and officials from CHC.
For his part, Paul Harris Foundation committee director Pete Schilling said that Seventh Day Adventist Clinic director Ken Pierson is expected to fly to Rota soon to meet with Rota Mayor Melchor Mendiola and Rota Health Center officials discuss the proposal to build a dental clinic on the island.
Schilling added that no less than Sen. Jovita Taimanao (Ind-Rota) has offered help in funding the proposed Rota dental clinic, suggesting that earmarks could come from the CHC budget.
Global Grants support large international activities with sustainable and measurable outcomes and are funded with a combination of District Designated Funds or cash contributions and matching funds from The Rotary Foundation’s World Fund.
The minimum award amount from the World Fund is $15,000, which means that the minimum project budget is $30,000.
