Neal removed as chief prosecutor—sources

Shelli Neal has been replaced as chief prosecutor of the Office of the Attorney General’s Criminal Division, according to several independent sources.
The sources disclosed that Attorney General Joey San Nicolas informed Neal on Friday that she is no longer the chief prosecutor. It is not clear yet who is the new chief prosecutor or acting chief prosecutor.
Saipan Tribune repeatedly contacted San Nicolas yesterday, but he was not answering his phone. He also did not reply to text messages asking for comment about Neal’s replacement.
OAG spokesperson Carla Torres said she is not aware about the development.
Saipan Tribune also contacted Neal but she did not comment.
Neal appeared as counsel for the CNMI government before Superior Court Associate Judge Joseph N. Camacho on Friday for a motion hearing in connection with the case against Joseph Crisostomo, who is facing murder and kidnapping charges over the killing of bartender Emerita Romero.
San Nicolas appointed Neal as chief prosecutor in April 2013. The then chief prosecutor, Peter Prestley, was assigned to the OAG’S Civil Division.
