Nisola, Castro top Hopwood spelling bee tilt

Two students topped this year’s spelling competition at Hopwood Junior High School, winning the right to represent their school in the upcoming Public School System-wide contest this month.
Eighth-grader Joyce Nisola was hailed the competition champion on Wednesday, besting 93 others in the initial round of the contest.
Nisola got the approving nod of judges after correctly spelling the winning words “stridency” and “vitriolic” in the final round, which had 20 contenders.
Nisola will be joined at the state-level competition for public schools by runner-up Christian Castro, a 7th-grader from Team D.
Nisola and Castro were awarded trophies and medals for their achievement while all participating students received certificates of participation.
According to Hopwood principal Jonas Barcinas, if Nisola wins at the state level, she will have the chance to represent the CNMI in Guam for the regional spelling bee and hopefully make it to the nationals in Washington D.C.
Barcinas said the school’s spelling bee competition started last week and was organized by the school administration and staff. He commended vice principals for Curriculum and Instruction Epi Cabrera and Jocelyn Manibusan-Tudela, as well as vice principal for Student Services Lynn Mendiola for the successful event.
