Eucon gains twin wins
Eucon International School bagged two victories in the 2013-2014 Marianas Interscholastic Sports Organization Boys Basketball last Monday.
In the junior varsity match at the Marianas High School Gymnasium, the Blazers had a rousing debut after routing Saipan International School, 48-28. In the varsity game, Eucon recovered from the opening day loss to the MHS Dolphins after defeating the debuting Mount Carmel School, 67-50.
The Blazers avoided a 0-2 start in the varsity division, as they bounced back from a 9-point halftime deficit and turned the tables on the Knights in the second half.
Down 26-35, the Blazers sizzled for 21 points against only 3 of the Knights to grab the upper hand at the end of the third period, 47-38. Rafael Wang anchored Eucon’s third-quarter push, as he dropped 10 of his total points in that canto. Allen Yu also contributed in the recovery, adding 5 markers.
Mount Carmel, which scored in twin digits in the first two quarters to control the opening half, was held to a field goal in the third period off William Camacho’s triple. The Knights went on to play catch up in the fourth canto after losing the driver’s seat in the third, but were frustrated by Amon Ren, Yu, and Wang, who combined for 19 of the Blazers’ 21 markers in the fourth to preserve the lead and the win.
Yu led all scorers with his 27 points, while Wang and Ren also finished in double figures with 17 and 14, respectively. Camacho paced Mount Carmel with his 24 markers, while Jared Sablan had a quiet 10 points.
Meanwhile, in the junior varsity game, Eucon picked up its scoring in the last three quarters en route to a 20-point win against the Geckos.
Eucon knocked in only 7 points in the opening period for a shaky 7-2 lead before it scored 11 markers apiece in the next two quarters to slowly pull away. The Geckos were without a field goal in the first canto and had one in the second before adding four in the third, but still faced a double-digit deficit after the third, 13-29. In the fourth quarter, both teams got into their rhythm, but the Blazers still had the last say, firing 19 markers against the 15 of the Geckos.
Zion Alamer led the Blazers with his 12 points, while Jack Wang and Wayne Li added 10 markers apiece. Christopher Cepeda was the lone double figure scorer for SIS with his 17 points.
