3 sports share spotlight

Tennis, basketball, football stories put some life to the slow week in CNMI sports, as athletes tried to regain their competitive form after the holiday break.
In tennis, the CNMI had three players who competed in two tournaments in Australia. Carol Lee went on to hand the Commonwealth two championship trophies after winning the girls U12 singles events in the 2014 Australia Post Margaret Court Cup in New South Wales and the 2014 Victorian Junior Grasscourt Championships in Victoria. Other CNMI players who participated in the tournaments in the Land Down Under were Christopher Cajigan and Michael Ren.
In basketball, the 2013-2014 Marianas Interscholastic Sports Organization Boys Basketball League kicked off at the Marianas High School Gymnasium. The MHS Dolphins went on to sweep the opener, winning the varsity division and the ninth grade (freshmen) matches against Eucon International School and Agape Christian School, respectively, last Wednesday.
Kagman High School also recorded twin wins, defeating Saipan Southern High School in the varsity and junior varsity games last Friday.
Still in basketball, the 2013 Sun Palace Christmas Basketball Tournament continued with its elimination game at the Gillette Multipurpose Gymnasium. Rollers 1 and 3 bagged wins to share the top spot in the boys division, while Hula Girls is in the No. 1 spot with its 5-0 record.
In football, action in the M-League continued with Korean Football Association, Inter Godfather’s and Shirley’s FC notching separate wins at the Oleai Sports Complex Field.
Over at the TSL Sports Complex, Astig Futsal ruled the Saipan Soccer School’s 2013 U13 Co-ed Christmas Futsal Tournament after downing Fake Madrid in the finals, 2-1. In the battle for third place Foot Loose prevailed over Kanoa Mighty Orange.
In bowling, Yho Villavicencio was crowned Budweiser Queen of the Lanes after winning Saipan Bowling Association’s 2013-season ending tournament.
