The CNMI Homeland Security and Emergency Management office issued yesterday a high surf advisory to warn the public of hazardous surf that is projected to persist until this morning, Friday.

The high surf advisory is now in effect until 6am today.

According to the advisory, a north swell remains large enough to generate hazardous surf along north facing reefs for the Marianas. The large north and northeast swell across the Marianas will produce hazardous surf of 7 to 10 feet along north facing shores of the Marianas but surf heights are expected to drop below hazardous levels by this morning.

Inexperienced mariners, especially those operating smaller vessels, should avoid boating in these conditions. If travel by boat is necessary, exercise caution especially near reef lines and when entering or leaving harbors and inlets. Avoid venturing near exposed reefs and beaches, especially those along north facing reefs as rip currents are life threatening.
