Rollers 1 hands Rollers 3 first loss
Prince Factor scored 27 points to power Rollers 1 to a 68-62 win over Rollers 3 in the boys division of the 2013 Sun Palace Christmas Basketball Tournament last Friday night at the Gillette Multipurpose Gymnasium.
The victory was second in a row for Rollers 1, which dropped its opener against Rollers 2. Rollers 3 absorbed its first defeat after a 2-0 start.
Factor drilled majority of his baskets in the second half and helped Rollers 1 keep its distance against the persistent Rollers 2 crew. Factor, who had only three field goals in the first half that ended with Rollers 1 ahead by only a hair, 24-23, fired 18 points in the second, including 8 straight midway in that canto.
Teaming up with Factor in foiling Rollers 3’s upset bid in the second half was Mike Arciaga, who knocked in 11 of his 14 markers in the final 20 minutes of play. Joining Factor and Arciago on the list of double figure scorer for Rollers 1 was Jaron Ano, who chipped in 12.
Wilfredo Francisco led Rollers 3’s offense with his 17 markers, while Kyle Rios added 15, but was limited to two field goals in the second half. Christian Morales contributed 12.
With Rollers 3 ending its streak, it now shares the second spot with its tormentor behind the undefeated Rollers 2 (3-0). Completing the field are Rollers 4 and FTMP, which hold similar 1-1 card, Dream Team (0-2), and Rollers 5 (0-3). Of the seven teams competing in the boys division, only the Top 4 after the round-robin play will advance to the single-elimination playoffs.
Futball 49, Tappers 42
In the girls division, Futball barged into the win column after beating Tappers.
Diane Pablo top-scored in Futball’s first victory in three games, nailing 20 points. Jenny Lee also finished in twin digits with his 14. Tappers, which dropped to a 0-3 slate in the first round of the double round-robin play also had two players tallying double figures with Chevy Kate Alipio firing 14 and Vanessa Bartolo earning 12.
Bartolo scored a string of 12 points past the halfway mark of the first half to give Tappers a 22-18 advantage. However, Bartolo faded away in the second half, forcing Alipio, who missed the first half of the match as she was on the other court for a futsal game, to have a shootout with Pablo in the final frame.
The Futball forward went on to win the exchange, drilling 16 points, two more than Alipio’s. Pablo also drew enough support from her teammates, while Alipio had only Serafina Rogoyawa backing her up in the second half.
