The 7th Annual Marianas Coffee Trail Run will be held on Jan. 25, 2014, featuring some of the greatest views and most challenging terrain of all foot races in the Northern Mariana Islands.

Starting at sea level at American Memorial Park on Saipan, the Marianas Coffee Trail Run heads up 1,500 feet to the highest point of the island, going around the summit of Mt. Tapochau before heading back to American Memorial Park. Sites along the way include Japanese-era coffee plantations and the Marianas Coffee Co. plantation.

Awards will be given for first, second, and third place overall male and female finishers in both the long course and short course. Course lengths will be announced shortly.

Early bird registration fees through 5pm, Jan. 23, 2013, are: $10 for ages 12 and under, $15 for ages 13-18, and $25 for ages 19 and up. An additional $10 will apply after the early bird deadline.

Entry fees included a finisher’s T-shirt, certificate of participation, and entry to the awards banquet on race day at 11:30am. Applications are now downloadable under the Events Calendar at www.mymarianas.com.

Show time and late registration on race day is at 5:30am, with the race starting at 6:30am.

In January 2013, 89 competitors joined the race. Top place honors in the 15K course male category went to Nicholas Matinadale (1:49:55) of the U.S. In the female category, Solidad Tenorio (2:25:18) placed first. On the 10K course, the top male finisher was Paul Anthony (53:19) of Saipan, while the top female finisher was Amy Sletten (1:04:57) of Saipan.

“The Annual Marianas Coffee Trail Run is a great opportunity to explore some of the most scenic trails on Saipan,” said Marianas Visitors Authority Community Projects manager Martin Duenas. “It’s also one of the few races where you can brag you ran to the top of the mountain chain that starts in the deepest place on the face of the eart—the Marianas Trench.”

The race is sponsored by Marianas Coffee Co., MVA, KFC Triathlon Club of Japan, Team PDI, and Northern Marianas Athletics. (MVA)
