Tribute to Jess Golf Tournament on Sat.
The “Tribute to Jess” Golf Tournament will take place this Saturday on the west course of Laolao Bay Golf Resort.
The event that will be held in honor of CNMI Sports Hall of Famer Jess Wabol, who passed away in October this year, has a 6am showtime and a 7am shotgun start. Tournament fee is $75 and format is double-peoria. Banquet and award presentation will immediately follow at the driving range area.
The tribute is being organized by the Refaluwasch Golf Association, family, friends, and golfing buddies to celebrate Wabol and his contribution tos golf and the sporting community.
Known as “Mr. Unorthodox” in the golfing circle because of his “wrong grips,” he proved many wrong with his achievements.
Wabol was a one-time club champion of Marianas Country Club, a regular CNMI golf representative in off-island regional competitions, a coach for many of our young baseball enthusiasts, an MVP with two-time soft-pitch champions DOE/PSS, and, so far, the only local golfer to have won the Tournament of Champions twice.
Benavente wins RGA Ace of Aces
Rep. Tony Benavente topped the RGA Ace of Aces held last Sunday at Coral Ocean Point.
The 9-handicapper Benavente tamed the windy COP by firing a 37 on the front nine and 39 on the back for a net 67 and a tie for first place with John Rebuenog. The lawmaker went on to prevail in the scorecard tiebreak.
With his feat, Benavente walked away $200 richer, his membership was waived for next year and a tournament of his choice will be paid by RGA. The newly crowned RGA Cup champion, who picked the Joeten Memorial Golf Classic, was also recognized for having the most pars in the year-end competition.
Meanwhile, other RGA members who joined the weekend tournament were Uly Kapileo (71), Dave Apatang (72), Frank Flores (72), Joe Saures (73), Tom Tebuteb (73), Tony Rogolifoi (74), Harry Nakamura (75), Nick Guerrero (76), Ray Tigilau (76), Tars Olopai (78), Manny Mangarero (82), and Joe Limes (94).
