Ex-DJ gets 2-year term for burning car

Former disc jockey Aziz Peter Mettao was sentenced yesterday to two years in prison for setting fire to a Power 99 Studio vehicle.
Superior Court Associate Judge David A. Wiseman said the two-year prison term shall run concurrently with Mettao’s two-year prison sentence in federal court for the same incident.
The judge said the sentence shall be tentative unless Mettao starts serving his prison time in federal prison before the sentencing hearing in Superior Court on Jan. 28, 2014.
Wiseman handed down the tentative sentence because he wants to make sure that Mettao will serve the prison term concurrent or within his two-year prison sentence in federal court.
Mettao, 28, was given credit for 420 days for time served. After his release from prison, he will be placed on probation for two years. He was ordered to pay a $150 fine and $100 court assessment fee.
Mettao pleaded guilty yesterday to reckless burning as part of a plea deal. Assistant public defender Eden Schwartz served as his counsel, while assistant attorney general Brian Flaherty represented the CNMI government.
Mettao set fire to his former employer’s 2010 Hyundai Tucson on Sept. 10, 2012 on Saipan, destroying the vehicle in the process.
The federal court sentenced him to two years in prison on Dec. 9. After completing his sentence, Mettao will be placed on three years of supervised release.
In that case, Mettao and his counsel signed a plea deal with the U.S. government. He pleaded guilty to destruction of a motor vehicle, a charge that has no mandatory minimum period of imprisonment.
