Ex-CPA firefighter gets 90-day prison term for another crime

Giovanni C. Sablan, a former Commonwealth Ports Authority firefighter who has prior criminal convictions, was slapped with a 90-day prison term for committing another criminal offense against his former girlfriend.
Superior Court Associate Judge Joseph N. Camacho sentenced the 25-year-old Sablan last week to six months in prison, all suspended except for 90 days, for disturbing the peace.
Camacho said the first 90 days shall be served without the possibility of parole or early release. Sablan was given credit for time served.
The judge said the remainder of the sentence shall be imposed in part or in whole for any probation violations.
Upon release from custody, Sablan will be placed on supervised probation for one year. He was required to complete anger management counseling and barred from drinking alcoholic beverages.
He was also ordered to pay a $500 fine, $100 restitution to the victim, and perform 100 hours of community service.
The Office of the Attorney General charged Sablan in June with interfering with a domestic violence report, disturbing the peace, and criminal contempt.
Sablan and counsel, assistant public defender Benjamin Petersburg, signed a plea deal with the government. Sablan pleaded guilty to disturbing the peace. The remaining charges were dropped as part of the deal.
According to court papers, Sablan disturbed the peace of the victim on April 23, 2013, on Saipan by punching a car’s dashboard and yelling at her.
The judge said the victim was never physically hurt.
As a special note, Camacho said, the victim asked that the most important condition is for Sablan to get anger management counseling.
Sablan is a mixed martial arts fighter. In October 2011, then Superior Court Associate Judge Perry B. Inos slapped him with a 58-day prison term for assaulting his former girlfriend in the parking lot of a hotel in Chalan Kanoa.
In December 2011, while still on probation, the defendant was arrested for allegedly turning violent, pushing his brother and challenging him to a fight. (Ferdie de la Torre)
