Competition galore on Saipan

Competitions were plenty last week.
To start off, there was the 7th Annual Hell of Marianas Century Cycle Race that drew around 180 on and off-island bikers. Japan’s Kazuhiro Yamamoto went on to emerge as the top finisher in the 100-kilometer race after completing the event in 2:56:38, while Australia’s Jodie Willet defended the women’s championship after clocking in at 3:03:44.
Also held last week was the 2014 Marianas Football Club that featured two games. The CNMI U12 National Team played in the first match at the Oleai Sports Complex Field and shut out its Guam counterpart, 4-0. In the second game, Quality Distributors edged the CNMI U19 National Team, 2-1.
At the Gillette Multipurpose Gymnasium, two championship matches took place with Blue Haus topping the first and beating MDX/Armatech, 88-79, to take the Masters crown in the UFO caging. In the Open division, KB Market routed the Hoopaholics, 77-49,
Still in basketball, the quarterfinal cast in the DL Corp. caging was completed. San Roque and I Love Saipan joined Pool B Top 2 finishers Island Floral and San Antonio in the Round of 8, while also qualifying were Chinatown and NMI Contractor in Pool A, which had Docomo Pacific and Fong’s Bakery as the first two quarterfinalists.
In badminton, defending champion Saipan Badminton Club was the first one to advance to the title game in the 7th Traders Insurance Badminton Team Tournament. Shirley’s Badminton Club and Community Badminton Club fought for the second and last finals ticket, while Golden Racquet dropped to the consolation round, and Taga Badminton Club was eliminated.
In volleyball, Saipan International School clinched the championship in the boys varsity division of the 2013-2014 Coalition of Private Schools Sports Association Volleyball League after beating Grace Christian Academy, 25-16, 25-21.
In the 2013 CFLA Youth Football Warrior/Midget League, the Eastern Lighting got its second victory after dominating the Northern Saints, 48-12, at the Airport Field.
