Saipan reps attend unprecedented equity event

Last week, Portland, Oregon-based nonprofit Education Northwest brought educational leaders together from all over the Pacific and Northwest regions for an unprecedented equity forum.
The event, “Prioritizing Equity Needs in the Northwest and Pacific Regions,” afforded participants the chance to identify and prioritize the critical educational equity needs they face in their schools and districts as well as create a collaborative regional agenda to share resources, strategies, and best practices with one another.
Throughout the day, representatives from as far south as Pago Pago, American Samoa, and as far north as Fairbanks, Alaska, worked in groups to generate regional equity priorities. Some themes that emerged were school improvement, culturally responsive practices, and family and community engagement.
“This is one of the best meetings I have ever attended,” said Glenn Paul Muña of the CNMI Public School System. “We share the same concerns and, together, we identified ways to provide safer environments for all students.”
“This is the first time ever that education leaders throughout the Pacific Northwest and the South Pacific regions have come together to define equity and prioritize equitable practices to ensure equitable outcomes for all students,” added Education Northwest CEO Steve Fleischman.
To conclude the event, participants made a commitment to continue this important work. They will collaborate to address their shared educational equity needs through an online community as well as a future convening.
