Spanish historian Dr. Carlos Madrid will be the featured guest on Sunday’s “Your Humanities Half-Hour” radio program.

Madrid, a faculty member of the University of Guam and the Micronesian Area Research Center, specializes in the histories of the Marianas, Micronesia, and the Philippines.

His book, Beyond Distances, published in 2006, chronicles the story of hundreds of Spanish political prisoners who were exiled to Guam, Saipan, and Rota in the 1870s.

Madrid will talk about the Spanish administration’s unsuccessful efforts to resettle residents of Rota to Guam in the 19th century and information relating to the Chamorro folk hero, Juan De Malas.
He is currently collecting archival and oral historical information on both of these topics.

Your Humanities Half-Hour, hosted by Catherine R. Perry, airs each Sunday from 2pm to 2:30pm on Power 99.

It features interviews with scholars, researchers, teachers, and community leaders on a wide range of humanities topics. Be sure to tune in! (PR)
