The controversial Affordable Care Act and its impact in the CNMI will be discussed during the Society for Human Resources Management-NMI Chapter’s monthly meeting tomorrow, Dec. 13, at Charley’s Cabaret of the Pacific Islands Club Saipan.

Guest speakers who will be talking about how ACA will affect the islands’ healthcare industry are Commerce Secretary and CNMI Insurance Commissioner Sixto Igisomar, consumer advocacy officer Caitlyn Neisis-Mocano of the Department of Commerce’s Consumer Assistance Program, and FHP Clinic and Take Care Insurance Co. clinic manager/service manager Nora Mae Sablan.

ACA, otherwise known as Obamacare, is a federal statute that aims to increase the quality and affordability of health insurance, lower the uninsured rate by expanding public and private insurance coverage, and reduce the costs of healthcare for individuals and the government.

Mufi Hannemann, the former mayor of Honolulu, Hawaii, and founder and chairman of the Pacific Century Fellows, will also grace SHRM’s December meeting.

Hannemann is expected to talk about the newly launched Marianas Chapter of the Pacific Century Fellows Program. The program is patterned after the national White House Fellows program with the intent of developing and bringing together strong community leaders to strategically tackle some of today’s most pressing matters.

SHRM’s presentation during its December meeting includes morning refreshments and lunch. The cost is $30 for SHRM members and $35 for non-members. Contact Malou Jardinero at 234-7171 local 1518 or email her at malou_jardinero@tanholdings.com for reservations.
