KB Market’s Leo Galarse and Blue Haus’ Junar Guiab took the Finals MVP plums in the Open and Masters divisions of the 2013 UFO-Budweiser Basketball League.

Galarse was handed the coveted award for playing a crucial role in KB Market’s 77-49 title win against the Hooopaholics last Saturday at the Gillette Multipurpose Gymnasium. The KB Market swingman scored a team-high 16 points and anchored a fourth-quarter breakaway to help his team win the championship in convincing fashion.

The former Saipan Southern High School standout fired two triples in the first half of the finals and then ended the third quarter with a 3-point play to turn a 30-31 halftime deficit to a 49-40 advantage. He then started the fourth with another and-1 play and went on to team up with Ivan Devero in a backbreaking 11-0 rally that padded KB Market’s lead to 20, 60-40. It was cruise control for KB Market from thereon.

Galarse was awarded the MVP trophy during the awards ceremony attended by UFO members and officials and James Lee of league sponsor MARPAC.

Also receiving trophies from league organizers were Mythical Five members Elmer Esdrelon of KB Market, Dan Barcinas of AXE Proa, Freddie Pelisamen of JP World/Mobil, Ken McCain of I Love Ladder Beach, and Kelvin Fitial of the Hoopaholics.

Trophies were also awarded to third placer Proa and runner-up Hoopaholics, while the Sportsmanship Award trophy donated by Topnotch was given to Kanoa Resort.

In the Masters division, Guiab was named MVP for leading Blue Haus’ title conquest against Armatech, 88-78. The veteran forward had a strong showing in the first half of the finals, scoring 14 points and powering Blue Haus to a big 47-27 lead. Armatech mounted a comeback in the second half, but Guiab and company held on to dethrone the 2011 champion.

Meanwhile, joining Guiab on the list of individual awardees were Mythical Five members Jun Tabora of Laguna/Erika’s Catering, Ferdie Tobias of D&Q Degree, Blue Haus’ Edsel Mendoza, Armatech’s Bruce Berline, and Ernie Moises of Shakir Realty.
