Mettao gets 2 years for arson charge

The federal court imposed yesterday a two-year prison term on Aziz Peter Mettao, a former disc jockey who set fire to a car owned by Power 99 Studio.
After his release, Mettao will be placed on three years of supervised release.
Mettao was required to pay $500 in restitution to Sorensen Media Group. He was given credit for time served.
The indictment charged Mettao with one count of malicious use of explosives, which carries a mandatory minimum sentence of five years in prison.
In June 2013, Mettao pleaded guilty to the charge of destruction of a motor vehicle, a charge that has no mandatory minimum period of imprisonment—as part of a plea deal.
Pursuant to the plea agreement, assistant U.S. attorney Rami Badawy and defense counsel Mark Scoggins agreed to a 24-month prison sentence or the low end of the sentencing guidelines.
Badawy said the U.S. government believes that a sentence of 24 months imprisonment is appropriate.
U.S. District Court for the NMI Chief Judge Ramona V. Manglona presided over the trial.
Mettao used beer bottles that he filled with flammable liquid to burn the Power 99 vehicle—a 2010 Hyundai Tucson—that was parked near the radio station in western Garapan in the early morning of Sept. 10, 2012.
