Guam experts to render safe WWII bomb

[B]SANTA RITA, Guam[/B]—Military, civilian personnel and residents who live or work near the entrance to Naval Magazine will be directed to evacuate the area starting at 3pm today, Dec. 5, while the Navy performs a render safe procedure on a World War II-era 500-lb bomb.
Explosive Ordnance Disposal Mobile Unit 5 Detachment Marianas will conduct the render safe procedure on the unexploded ordnance. The bomb was discovered earlier this week in a construction site across from building 400, which is near the entrance to the Naval Magazine.
All military, civilian personnel and residents within 2,150 feet from the construction site must evacuate the area at 3pm and avoid the area until the all clear is given. The Guam Police Department will secure traffic along Route 5 and Route 12 immediately outside the Naval Magazine gate entrance. The evacuation period is not expected to last beyond 6pm but updates will be communicated to all those affected as soon as possible.
Once the bomb is rendered safe, it will be transported to an area on Naval Magazine for proper disposal.
The Navy has been in constant communication with Guam Homeland Security and the Guam Police Department in preparation for this evolution. All safety measures are in place to ensure the protection of base personnel and the general public.
