The Tinian Care Club fundraiser for Typhoon Haiyan/Yolanda relief efforts on Nov. 30, 2013, was a certified success, thanks to the joint effort of the Mayor of Tinian’s Office, UNIFIL, and the Tinian Lions Club.

Tinian first lady Doris Dela Cruz said, “It was great fun. So many people came out to play bingo and just support the effort to help those people who are suffering from the typhoon in the Philippines.”

Dela Cruz created the Care Club during the first year of her husband’s administration. “This is an easy and fun way for us to help people outside the government. On Friday and Saturday evenings, the mayor will turn on the utilities at the Antonio M. Borja Amphitheater, so we can have a public bingo to help raise funds for people in need. Sometimes it is for medical needs, sometimes for education. It isn’t a lot but it helps. Most of all, it is good to see our people coming together to share,” said Dela Cruz.

Last Saturday, the Tinian Care Club was able to raise $1,300. The Care Club will write a check for that amount to the CNMI Chapter of the American Red Cross, who will send it to where it is needed most in the Philippine relief effort. (PR)
