HAGATNA, Guam—The 54th Meeting of the Association of Pacific Island Legislatures’ board of directors began yesterday at the Guam Legislature. Representatives from 12 Pacific island governments will be meeting at the Legislature until Friday to discuss an array of issues affecting the region.

“This is a critical time for the leaders of our region to work together to ensure that our people are healthy and prosperous in our islands,” said Speaker Won Pat, who is the current APIL president. “I will be encouraging my fellow Pacific Island leaders to strengthen the role APIL plays in our region, because it truly is a powerful body that can use its voice to make a difference for our people.”

Yesterday’s presentations from various community organizations focused on Micronesia Youth Services Network and Payuta, Inc.; Preventing Human Trafficking in the Pacific Region; The 12th Festival of Pacific Arts; and Reach Out Pacific: Projects and Services out of Hawaii.

APIL delegates also challenged representatives from the Guam Legislature in a friendship softball game at Agana Heights Softball Field last night.

The 12 Pacific Island governments represented in APIL are American Samoa, Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands, Chuuk, Kosrae, Pohnpei, Yap, Republic of the Marshall Islands Palau, Hawaii, Guam, Nauru, and Kiribati. (PR)
