MTEC visits eight elementary schools

The Marianas Tourism Education Council wrapped up its annual fall outreach to elementary school students with a visit to Garapan Elementary School last Monday, Nov. 25.
This school year, MTEC has taken its message of the importance of tourism to hundreds of students at eight elementary schools, with plans to continue outreach to junior and senior high schools in the spring.
“The children of today are the future of the Northern Mariana Islands tourism industry, and MTEC is pleased to be at the forefront of reaching out to help prepare them by giving them information about jobs in the tourism and hospitality industry,” said MTEC chair Vicky Benavente. “It’s encouraging to see the sophistication of their understanding of the industry grow, especially for those students who we have spoken with before. We have more MY WAVE (Marianas Youth Welcome All Visitors Enthusiastically) Clubs now, too, so we can see that they’re getting the message.”
This year MTEC and the Marianas Visitors Authority have visited Koblerville, Tanapag, San Vicente, Dandan, San Antonio, W.S.R., and Garapan elementary schools.
The MTEC presentation covers visitor profiles, how tourism helps the Northern Marianas, jobs in tourism, and how students can help support the industry. This year, MTEC has emphasized potential careers in the industry with several guest presenters: Hyatt Regency Saipan chef de partie Benjamin Babauta Jr.; DFS Saipan product sales manager Jamika Reyes; Delta Air Lines’ Chris Concepcion; craftsman Michael Finey; and Pacific Islands Club Saipan’s finance manager See Cabrera, operations and events manager Dennis Tababa, front desk supervisor Arlette Park, and restaurant manager Rommel Bartolo.
