2 witnesses testify in trial of ex-cop

The trial of a former Tinian police officer who is accused of sexually abusing a then 14-year-old girl in 2008 inside the Tinian police station began yesterday with the prosecution calling in two witnesses.

Saipan Tribune learned that two witnesses completed their testimonies yesterday. The trial of the 42-year-old Melvin Ilo Monkeya will resume at 8:30am today.

The trial is being held at the Superior Court Tinian. Associate Judge Joseph N. Camacho is presiding.

Chief prosecutor Shelli Neal and assistant attorney general Chemere McField are prosecuting the case.

Attorney Jennifer Dockter is court-appointed counsel for Monkeya, who is charged with one count of sexual abuse of a minor in the first degree.

According to the prosecution, Monkeya admitted to having sex with the minor in November 2008.
